Redemption, love, and redemption: themes that the two masters devoted their lives to. Unusually for Schumann, whose brush strokes were so quick, it took nine years from conception to completion for this lengthy work to be completed. The theme is taken from Goethe's well-known "Faust," but Schumann read the theme of "death and transformation" from his own perspective and reflected it in the work. The work is full of serene beauty throughout.
