Mahler's arrangement of "Death and the Maiden" is well known, but Mahler's version is for string orchestra. This arrangement is reconstructed in a large scale with four horns, two trumpets, and even timpani. For those accustomed to the conventional form, this will be quite disconcerting. However, Stein says, "I tried to form a new symphony out of this wonderful chamber music. Indeed, the more one listens to the piece, the more one begins to believe that this is the original form of the symphony. The Unfinished Symphony has a scherzo based on a fragment from Schubert's (1797-1828) notebook and a final movement based on a fragment of music for Rosamunde. This is the true form!
