Description:
Havergal Bryan (1876-1972) was considered a "composer of mystery" until the 1950s. He wrote many works during his lifetime, including 32 symphonies, as well as orchestral works and operas. Despite his talent, he was not very industrious, and perhaps because of this, his works were rarely performed, so that even his existence was almost forgotten, except by a few enthusiastic fans. However, as soon as his greatest work, Symphony No. 1, was performed in 1961 by an orchestra composed mainly of amateurs, it was so well received that it brought him back into the limelight. This album contains two orchestral works and two symphonies. As one would expect, the music is not as grandiose a contrivance as the first, but just listening to the fanfare at the beginning of the symphonic poem "In Memoriam" is certainly an exciting piece of music. This is a composer I would like to take this opportunity to review again. Naxos Japan
