Grace Williams is a composer born in Wales, England. Her father, William Matthew Williams, was the conductor of the famous "Romilly Boys Choir," and she was introduced to music as a child in the natural beauty of Barry. In Vienna, she studied composition with Egon Veresh. In 1947, due to health reasons, he returned to Barry to work for the BBC, where he remained until his death. Williams maintained a lifelong interest in vocal music and continued to write in this genre into his later years. This album, all of which are world premiere recordings, includes a wide range of songs from her early, relatively simple compositions, to late Romantic songs from the 1930s to the late 1950s influenced by Mahler and Richard Strauss, to folk arrangements for children's programs commissioned while working for the BBC, and to works that make use of the unique language of her native Wales.
