The works of Ries (1784-1838) are now completely forgotten, but during his lifetime he was surprisingly popular as a "composer and pianist. Unlike his teacher Beethoven, Ries remained a household name throughout Europe until near the end of his life. The "Piano Concerto" on this album is his seventh concerto, composed in 1823, and represents his retirement from the stage on his return to his native London, where he had lived since 1813, as well as his earlier "Grand Concerto on 'Rule Britannia'" and the variations on Op. 170, both of which were also written in 1823. The "Great Music from 'Ruhr Britannia'" and the Variations on Op. 170, also written before his retirement, pay homage to England. Hinterhuber's luminous and beautiful sound is also worth listening to. [comments courtesy of Naxos]---.
