Description:
Italian composer Cristian Carrara's idea for an opera about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which had been in the works for many years, was commissioned by the Teatro dell'Opera di Messe and the Teatro Pavarotti-Frani of Modena. On the surface, it appears to be the story of an Israeli woman and a Palestinian man, but the real protagonists are an unnamed old man and his wife Hannah. Set in the divided city of Hebron, the descriptive percussion-heavy music depicts how the power of love lives on amidst the difficulties of dialogue and the illusion of peace. Synopsis. An old winemaker takes care of his ill wife Hannah and entrusts her burial to Ruth (an Israeli soldier) and Mohammed (a Palestinian archaeologist). The two men, who had been enemies, begin to understand each other as they spend the night together, and at the burial the next day, the old man entrusts them with the future of the land. The old man eventually leaves, and in the silence that follows the sandstorm that hits the checkpoint, where tensions between soldiers and civilians are high, a prayer for eternal peace is left behind, along with Hannah's image.
