Donizetti adapted his masterpiece tragedy "Lucia di Lammermoor" (premiered in Naples in 1835) for French audiences as "Lusi di Lammermoor" (premiered in Paris in 1839) from a French libretto. In this adaptation, the composer did not simply replace the Italian libretto with a French one, but also substituted some of the characters and made some changes to the libretto and music. The premiere in Paris was well received, and Berlioz, who had been critical of the original "Lucia di Lammermoor," is known to have appreciated this adaptation. The rising star soprano Caterina Sala, who sang the role of Adina in "L'elisir d'amore" at the Donizetti Festival in 2021 to great acclaim, takes on the role of the title role. Her stable technique and rich, beautiful voice, which is not typical of a newcomer, are overwhelming in the "Madness," leaving the audience in a state of shock.Pierre Dumousseau, a French talent making his Italian debut at the Donizetti Festival, will lead the Orchestra Ri-Orginari, founded to perform 19th century operas on period instruments, and the Academy Choir of La Scala in Milan in a performance of "Lusi di Lammermoor," a work that is rich in drama and music.
