Description:
This "The Italian Lady of Algiers" was Rossini's (1792-1868) tenth opera. Rossini, who was 21 years old at the time, staged "The Trial Stone" in Venice, but it was cancelled due to unpopularity and he was a little discouraged. However, he was asked by the same theater to write a new opera, and in a great hurry, he wrote "The Italian Lady of Algiers. He wanted "an opera libretto with a lot of humor," and he chose a libretto by Angelo Anella. This was originally used for another opera, but Rossini didn't care. Rossini completed the opera in just one month, much to the delight of the audience at the time. The famous Stendhal also laughed out loud when he saw this opera. It is a simple story about a man who gets tired of his old wife, turns his attention to a young girl, and gets bullied a lot, but this kind of story is always alive and well. The story moves along at a brisk pace, but the skill required of the singers is of the highest difficulty level, and it is sure to be a pleasure just to listen to it.This performance was performed live at the Rossini Festival in Wirtbart in 2008. It uses Agio Corghi's revised edition. Naxos Japan
