Gregory Fritz is a composer born in Pennsylvania in 1954. He studied music from childhood, pursuing composition, jazz, and tuba at the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. Since studying Spanish wind music as a Fulbright scholar, he has devoted himself to promoting Spanish music. He has composed over 100 works for various ensembles, including orchestras, wind bands, and chamber music, and his works have been performed over 1,000 times in 26 countries around the world. He is also highly regarded as an educator, having taught at the Berklee College of Music for 36 years, served as chair of the composition department for 14 years, and taught more than 12,000 students. This album contains four works with a common programmatic theme.Commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra, the "London Overture" depicts the city's diverse expressions. Two symphonic works set to music the scenes of a day in Valencia and the region's charm (these are orchestral arrangements of pieces originally written for Valencia's wind ensemble). Set against the backdrop of Providence's landmarks, "Waterplace Park" features five distinctive soloists: bass clarinet, marimba, bass trombone, piccolo, and timpani. The vibrant energy, festive spirit, and richly colored, human-centered landscapes of the city are vividly brought to life by the London Symphony Orchestra's superb ensemble playing. Naxos Japan
