Sousa (1854-1932)
Description:
From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Sousa composed numerous marches and was called the "King of Marches." In 1892, he founded the "Sousa Wind Band," which gave 3,500 concerts in its first seven years and enjoyed unprecedented popularity. However, Sousa did not only write marches; he also made great achievements in the field of operettas. It is unfortunate, however, that the complete works are rarely performed. Featured in this 17th collection are the suite from "American Made," set in a glass factory, and the quintet from "The Smugglers," which disappeared from the stage a few performances after its premiere. Other pieces include a march for the "Chicago Exposition" that uses Wagner's melody and a rare "Pan-American March." This disc is full of rare pieces by Sousa that cannot be heard anywhere else.
