Description:
Copeland's (1900-1990) unusual ballet "Hark! Hear ye!" . was written for the talented female dancer Ruth Page (1899-1991). Ruth Page was the first American dancer to dance in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1925, and American composers of the time, including Copland, competed to write music for her, contributing to the development of ballet and dance in 20th century America. She was a great inspiration to the American ballet dance of the 20th century. Ye!" is a bizarre story set in a courtroom trying a murder at a local nightclub, where the witnesses are a hostess, a waiter, and a newlywed couple who were in the bar at the time. The story is a ballet in which the killer is drawn from the conflicting testimonies of each witness. The companion piece, "Appalachian Spring," is one of Copland's most famous works, a ballet depicting a spring celebration in 1800s Pennsylvania after American pioneers built new farmhouses, and is also unique in that its title is not directly related to the story.
