Description:
Daniel Poole (1956-) usually produces warm, lyrical works. However, in this piece, emotions of rage, sorrow, and hope swirl together in a maelstrom of intensity. Although he was born in the United States, his parents were born in Iran, and he himself has fond memories of spending a year of his childhood there. His experience was not a pleasant one, and he says he fell in love with Western culture as if in revolt against it, but in recent years he has finally been able to look again at the situation in Iran and ask the fundamental question, "Why war? This oratorio was born out of his thoughts, with the first part being a song about war and destruction, the second part being a prayer, and the third part being a promise of peace. The word "season," scattered throughout the text in various languages, is used as a metaphor, a moment of change and reformation, of renewal and reconciliation.
