Here is music that evokes the diverse and varied landscape of contemporary America to the extreme. The composer, McTee (1953-), began playing piano at the age of 6. Her teacher placed particular emphasis on "improvisation," and she was interested not only in classical music but also in jazz improvisation and electronic music, which undoubtedly had a strong influence on her compositions. She also studied for three years with the great Polish composer Penderecki, an experience that was also very important to her. The works on this album are all unique and ambitious. Take a listen to the opening track, "Circuit," for example. The sounds move around in a busy, regular fashion, overflowing with energy, and syncopated rhythms are heard interspersed amongst them. These stimulating rhythmic exchanges are exactly what people are looking for today. The thought-provoking title of "Symphony No. 1" is also a rhythmic explosion.Here is "Einstein's Dream," where the old mingles with the new, "Double Play" with its mysterious colors, and functional beauty.
