The fourth collection in the series includes three pieces: "Tasso, Sorrow and Triumph," reminiscent of the great "Faust Symphony," "Hero's Lament," about the French Revolution, and "Hungary," orchestrated from the piano piece "Heroic March in Hungarian Style. The performances are also attractive for their straightforward and standard style. With his 13 symphonic poems inspired by paintings and literary works, Liszt broke with the normative four-movement symphony to create a work in one movement form with frequent changes of contrasting moods and a sense of unity through the transformation of a single circular musical theme. The CD includes the following works: "Hungary," a patriotic depiction of the Hungarians' struggle for independence in 1848. The solemn "Hero's Lament" is described by Liszt himself as "the sound of a reverent veiling over the graves of the heroes who die one after another in repeated wars and massacres."In "Tasso, Sorrow and Triumph," written as an epilogue to an earlier symphonic poem by Liszt himself, it is based on the tragic fate of the 16th century Italian poet Tasso.
