Francis Poulenc is music itself. Darius Milhaud's words apply to all of Poulenc's works, but his chamber works in particular reflect the essence of Poulenc's individual style and witty compositional technique. The box contains a selection of Poulenc's chamber works. In this box set, starting with "Negro Rhapsody," which marked Poulenc's debut as a composer, we find "Sextet," in which the virtuosity of the players shines through, and "Flute Sonata," which is light and stylish, as well as "Piano Sonata," a work with an unexpectedly stately style. The "Violin Sonata" and "Bagatelle," both of which have an unexpectedly profound style, as well as "Sailing to the Island of Cythele" and other works for two pianos and four hands, are also included. The program includes such ethereal pieces as the cantatas "Masked Ball" and "Animal Poems," both of which are accompanied by vocal music. These pieces are performed by leading French performers. The performance by Alexandre Tharaud, who made his debut in Japan in the early 1990s, is especially valuable. Also included are two versions of one of Poulenc's masterpieces, "The Tale of Babar the Elephant," a musical tale for piano and narrator, one in French and the other in English.The narrators here are girls who were 12 and 13 years old, respectively, at the time of the performance. Their innocent voices convey the simplicity of the story.
