Description:
In 2018, Rahaf Shani became the youngest Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in the orchestra's history. The young conductor Shani and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra recorded Mendelssohn's popular "Scotland". The recording also includes three of Mendelssohn's mute songs arranged by Shani himself for the orchestra. In Mendelssohn's "Scottish Symphony," Shani carefully proceeds through this dark and melancholy piece, but the firm singing creates a dense sound construction full of vitality, and the interplay of the inner voices is clearly and lushly developed. Toward the final movement, the tempo is fast, but the music is profound and full, and the whole is brought together by close communication with the orchestra and a high level of expressiveness based on a deep understanding of the work. Rahav Shani's own orchestral arrangement of the three "Mummets" was performed on the date of his arrival in 2023, and it seems as if Mendelssohn's paintings on the piano were directly painted on a large canvas, so beautifully arranged and performed that one would think Mendelssohn himself had arranged them.
