Recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1979 at the end of the analog recording period, this disc features a masterful performance by the young Muti under his control, with a great contrast between slow and fast movements, as well as between stillness and movement. The first recording of "Cavalleria Rusticana," a work in which Muti excels in particular, is a masterpiece of his ability to portray the inner life of the listener and to liberate the listener. This reissue goes back to the original master in the country of origin and has undergone the latest mastering as the final form of the package. The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in the original country for this release, and mastered separately for the SACD and CD layers. This reissue project has focused on releasing Muti's first opera recording for EMI, "Aida," as well as other orchestral works and digital recordings on SACD.
