(Omitted) The recordings on this CD capture Richter in the very twilight of his career. The two Bach concertos and the Mozart concerto are live recordings made in 1993 at the Teatro Regio in Parma. The conductor was Yuri Bashmet, a close friend of Richter’s. (Omitted) The Schumann performance with the Borodin String Quartet is a live recording from June 1994 at the Ferme de Méré in Touraine, France, and at the Cité des Congrès in Nantes. One year before his final concert, Richter was 79 years old. Earlier that year, Richter had given his final tour in Japan. Yet even when listening to these recordings from the very end of his life, it is impossible to imagine an elderly man who had grown weary of music. Consider, for example, the crystalline clarity of this Bach. …In his late 70s, he played Bach as if tackling an entirely new work. No, it actually was new. According to Monsajon’s writings, Richter did not begin performing Bach’s Piano Concertos No. 3 and No. 7 until the 1990s. The horizons of his music continued to expand.
