The album *Konoma*, released last year, was highly acclaimed by media and listeners both in Japan and abroad, becoming a work that symbolizes Takuro Okada’s musical exploration. *StillWater* marks his first physical release since *Konoma* and is now available nationwide! This album features tracks created for the campaign promoting the “MT2,” a new footwear model designed by TOKYODESIGNSTUDIO New Balance. This model, which updates the craftsmanship New Balance has cultivated over its 120-year history to suit modern lifestyles, is characterized by a barefoot-like lightness, high breathability, and an enveloping fit. It was developed as a pair of shoes that seamlessly bridges everyday life and the outdoors. Okada drew inspiration from this product to compose this album. Side A, “StillWater,” features Shōei Ikeda on flute and is composed of a minimalist ensemble that strips the sound down to the bare essentials while incorporating elements of folk and Afro-music. Recorded based on improvised performances and captured on analog tape, the track conveys the subtle fluctuations of sound—like a still water’s surface—and a rich sense of space. Side B, “DohmanSehman,” takes the mood of vintage funk as its starting point while weaving in a melodic sensibility and folkloric resonance reminiscent of Japanese folk songs and kayōkyoku. Featuring up-and-coming musicians such as Kei Matsumaru (alto sax), Mei Katsumaru (tenor sax), Yuma Koda (Wurlitzer/Farfisa), Yuka Konishi (bass), and Hayate Ebihara (drums). The track is marked by a powerful groove created by a spatial mix reminiscent of dub techniques and a robust rhythm section. It is a piece that leaves a strong impression. “StillWater,” filled with serene stillness, and “DohmanSehman,” which embodies a powerful groove. Through these two contrasting tracks, this work showcases the breadth of Takuro Okada’s creativity since the release of *Konoma*.
