[The third collaboration between these two prodigies is an ambitious work that examines the confusion of modern society—featuring original compositions by both artists!] Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Fazil Say—both distinctive artists who master the violin and piano and compose their own works—reunite to integrate the two once-closely intertwined acts of performance and composition, while using music to reexamine contemporary society from multiple angles. The opening piece, Sai’s “Lost Screams”—dedicated to Kopachinskaya—sharply depicts modern-day conflicts, fears, and quiet protest. The following piece, “Myth,” was composed during Szymanowski’s artistic transition period and reinterprets ancient Greek mythology through his unique impressionistic sensibility. Kopachinskaya’s “UniSolo” (meaning “together, yet as if solo”) was conceived as a musical process with no predetermined endpoint; it features an introspective approach that unfolds from the tuning of the piano (to the note A) on stage and is characterized by a tense, improvisational dialogue with the instrument. Prokofiev’s “Violin Sonata No. 1,” written under the harsh Soviet regime during World War II, presents the fear and oppression embedded within it with a sense of urgency as a message that directly resonates with contemporary crises such as dictatorship and the trampling of human rights. These four works, set against different historical backdrops, are united by the themes of “threat, memory, hope, and transformation,” vividly depicting the dialogue of people who raise their voices even as they are buffeted by the tides of history.
