Founded by Tom Poster and Elena Urioște, the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective performs 25 to 30 concerts a year and has recorded its repertoire—honed through these performances—for CHANDOS. The tracks on this recording include the “Piano Quintet,” an early work composed while Brahms was a student at the Paris Conservatory that reveals the influence of his beloved mentor, and the “String Octet,” a major work composed when he was 19 that weaves intricate counterpoint into Romanian folk elements and the delicate sounds of French music. A concert held just before the recording was described in *Strad* magazine as follows: “The audience at Wigmore Hall was so enthusiastic they nearly blew the roof off—and rightly so. If Enescu’s Octet is performed like this, it will gain popularity rivaling that of Mendelssohn’s Octet,” noted *Strad* magazine.
