Description:

The Dresden-born composer Paul Bütner was self-taught before studying under the master Dreseke; he began teaching at the Dresden Conservatory in 1896 and gained recognition both as a conductor of workers’ choirs and as a music critic. In 1915, he achieved success with the premiere of his Symphony No. 3, performed by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Arthur Nikisch, and was highly praised by Richard Strauss. However, in 1933, due to his opposition to the Nazis and his social democratic stance, he was stripped of all public offices, and his works were banned from performance as “degenerate art.” Forced into poverty and silence, he died in 1943 in destitution. After the war, his work began to be reevaluated in East Germany, but his true rehabilitation did not occur until the 21st century. His works, which follow in the lineage of Schubert and Bruckner and feature intricate counterpoint and majestic beauty, are once again being appreciated. Symphony No. 3, consisting of three movements, is a magnificent work that carries on the tradition of German Romanticism. The first movement is in sonata form, featuring a skillful alternation between D-flat major and C-sharp minor, closely related keys with the same name but different pitches. The second movement shifts from a Brahms-like chorale to a dance-like passage, creating a world reminiscent of Wagner. The finale unfolds with passionate music modeled after Schumann, culminating in a brilliant conclusion. Completed in 1918 following World War I, Symphony No. 4 is a four-movement work that includes a scherzo. The orchestra’s brilliant radiance and a frenzy that could be described as wild alternate vividly; in the final movement, while maintaining a Brucknerian austerity, the music undergoes an uplifting development before settling into a serene sound.
