【The Elite Ensemble Returns with Carefully Selected Works: The Second Volume of Josquin Desprez】 Cut Circle, the Renaissance vocal ensemble active primarily on America's West Coast and drawing attention at early music festivals across Europe, presents the second volume of their Josquin Desprez collection. This album gathers works composed by Josquin during his relatively early years, believed to have been written by the late 1480s while serving Duke Ascanio Sforza of Milan. The first half of the album features the "Missa 'Amico Bodiam'," considered one of Josquin's earliest Masses, though its specific commission for the Milan court remains unconfirmed. One is struck by how early his mastery was evident: he freely employs a technique of building the entire composition around a single melody, elevating an overtly bawdy original song into sophisticated polyphonic writing. The latter part includes two motets showing influences from the preceding generation of the Franco-Flemish school, and a medieval-style motet where multiple voices sing different texts.The inexhaustible compositional techniques, reminiscent of the erudition of Leonardo da Vinci who frequented the Milanese court during the same period as Josquin, combined with the Cut Circle's interpretation where five singers each with distinct vocal personalities deliver a perfect ensemble, offer a unique musical experience spanning centuries.
