Description:

At over 80 years old, Heinz Karl Gruber remains active on the front lines, making him an unparalleled figure in the contemporary music world. His music, as a composer, conductor, performer, chanson singer, and educator, is most characterized by the coexistence of rigorous compositional skill, sharp social criticism, and Viennese irony and humor. Drawing on his background in boys' choirs, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and training within the Schoenberg tradition, he challenged the absolute dogmatism of avant-garde music in the 1960s, aiming to fuse popular appeal with art music. The success of his 1978 premiere Frankenstein!! established his international reputation, earning him recognition as a figure who brought liberation and accessibility to contemporary music. The Short Stories from the Vienna Woods included on this album is a reworking of his opera Tales from the Vienna Woods into an orchestral suite. Through distorted waltzes and polkas, it distills tragedy and the cruelty of society. The Piano Concerto was born from discussions between pianist Emanuel Ax and HK Gruber.Composed between 2014 and 2016 as a joint commission by the New York Philharmonic, Stockholm Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Written after the completion of the opera Tales from the Vienna Woods, its content is closely linked to that work. The piano solo piece "Castle in the Air" is a work that contains the contradiction between tonal triads and serial techniques. Frank Dupre, performing the piano, is a versatile musician active as a pianist, conductor, and leader of a jazz trio. He established his international reputation with recordings of Kapustin's piano concertos, winning the ICMA and Opus Classic Awards. Highly acclaimed in solo, piano-concerto, and conducting roles, he has served as Artistic Partner of the Heilbronn Württemberg Chamber Orchestra since 2023. An active collaborator with contemporary composers, he remains one of the most sought-after performers, regularly appearing with major orchestras and at world-renowned music festivals. Naxos Japan
