Description:
New 4-CD box set of symphonies and chamber music by Thure Langström! Türe Langström made his mark on the history of music in Sweden at the beginning of the 20th century with his unique style. Born in Stockholm, he studied in Berlin and Munich under Hans Pfitzner. He was active as a composer, critic, and conductor, and made significant contributions to the music world in his native Sweden, serving as principal conductor of the Göteborg Symphony Orchestra from 1922 to 1925 and founding the Swedish Society of Composers in 1924. His early successes included the symphonic poem "The Praise of the Drinking God," followed by four symphonies, the first of which, composed in 1914, is in memory of his beloved playwright Johann August Strindberg. The second symphony, No. 2 in 1919, is in D minor and in three movements, and is characterized by its clear structure and reverberant sound. Although it is in a single movement, it depicts a majestic Nordic landscape in shifting moods, and is reminiscent of Sibelius and Nielsen. His fourth symphony in 1936, while based on the key of D minor, is an ambitious work that departs from tonality and begins heavily in a five-movement form, with an attempt at atonality in the third movement. It is the culmination of his symphonic works. The symphony is conducted by Mikhail Jurowski (1945-2022). The performance is full of the crispness of his father, Vladimir Jurowski, who excelled at Shostakovich, and highlights the profound sound of the Langström symphony. Langström's chamber works have strong literary ties: "The Legend of Lake Mälaren" was inspired by Strindberg, and the string quartet "Night Music" by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The latter, dedicated to Nielsen, is characterized by a collage-like technique that mixes polyphonic logical structures with emotional expression. He also liked Shakespeare's works: "Arioso" is a derivative of the stage music "Hamlet," and "Improvisata" was inspired by "The Tempest. The "Improvisata" was inspired by "The Tempest," while the "Suite for Violin and Piano" is a unique work that seems to anticipate the music of the play. The complete symphonies (999748) and chamber music (999689) released in 2000 have been added to this new box set. Naxos Japan
