Description:

English composer Ethel Mary Smythe was a pioneering female musician active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and at the same time a fighter in the women's liberation movement. With strong will and energy, she joined the suffragette movement (women's suffrage movement) and remained a pioneering feminist. Although she lost her hearing in her later years, she devoted herself to literary activities, writing autobiographies and essays about her career as a composer and her experiences. The opera "The Forest" is one of Smythe's masterpieces, a tragedy about young lovers who are played by a woman rumored to be a witch in a mysterious forest inhabited by spirits. Smythe himself wrote the libretto in German, and it is filled with a chorus of spirits, unbridled passion, unwavering loyalty, and a love that transcends death. It was first performed at the Berlin Court Opera in 1902 and in London the following year.In 1903, she performed a very successful opera at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, which was the first time in the history of the opera house that a woman composer had performed a work. She won the Lily Lehmann Prize and the first prize in the opera category at the Renata Tebaldi International Competition. She studied at the Semperoper and is currently based in Germany, where she is actively engaged as an opera singer. She is also known for her solo singing of Kimigayo at the opening ceremony of the 83rd National High School Baseball Tournament. Naxos Japan
