This album commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mackerras, who showed a special enthusiasm for Czech music. Born in New York, USA, Mackerras moved with his family to Australia when he was two years old.After returning to the UK, he became an enthusiastic promoter of Czech music, and is especially noted for his work on the UK premieres of Janacek's operas. The "Macropulos Affair" recorded here was performed live on the fourth day of the British premiere.The vocalists, including Marie Collier, a dramatic soprano from Australia, are in fine voice, and their passionate performance is evident. Although the English singing inevitably has a slightly different sound and intonation from the Czech, Mackerras has made a significant contribution to the popularization of Janacek's works in the UK, as well as in Western Europe, and this release is a fitting tribute to that.The margins include a studio recording for broadcast of "Diary of a Missing Man". Mackerras does not participate, but you can hear interpretations (also sung in English) by two famous singers. Both recordings are reissued from BBC broadcast sources. Naxos Japan
