Description:
Finnish composer Toivo Kula, who studied with Sibelius and also studied in Paris, attracted attention for his unique lyrical style rooted in folk songs, but his untimely death at the age of 34 in a quarrel at a celebration after the end of the civil war resulted in a great loss to Finnish music. His untimely death was a great loss to Finnish music. The second volume of the Lieder collection contains songs that combine eloquent emotional expression with the rich harmonies of the late Romantic period. Many of the Finnish poems and songs follow the common pattern of beginning with a description of nature or landscape, followed by a transition to the inner life of the human being. The first song on the album, "The Daughter and the Noble Son," is a piano version of a song with orchestral accompaniment. It depicts a daughter waiting for her return from war and her fiancé, who has murdered her brother and become a monk; the daughter has given up on seeing him again and married someone else. The daughter gives up on seeing him again and marries someone else, and the two end up spending their days far apart and alone. The album also includes a total of 18 other pieces, including pieces using folk song material. Soprano Jenni Lattilla, who studied at the Sibelius Academy, makes the most of the beauty of the words and sings with great expressiveness. Naxos Japan
