Description:

Born in Thuringia in 1713, Johann Ludwig Kreps was educated by his father Johann Tobias, an organist who studied with Johann Sebastian Bach, and in 1726 he entered St. Thomas' School in Leipzig. There he demonstrated his musical talent and joined the Collegium Musicum led by Bach as a harpsichord, violin, and lute player. He also learned composition from Bach and began his career as a composer. Bach highly valued Kreps' talent, and there is an anecdote that he left the phrase "a good crab that lives in a brook" (in German, Bach is "brook" and Kreps is "crab"). Later, he took a position as court organist in Altenburg, a position he held until his death, and although he left many works, including organ pieces, cantatas, and chamber music, he did not hold any further important positions. One reason for this is that Kreps' style, which had inherited Bach's strict counterpoint, was already outdated.Kreps, who was recognized for his ability as a high student of Bach's later years but overshadowed by his enormous presence, came to prominence in 2009 when Felix Friedrich, a church organist in Altenburg, where he was active, published a systematic collection of his works. In the process of researching and studying Kreps' works, Friedrich discovered a manuscript containing six sonatas for clavier and published a revised score of them in 2011. The six sonatas follow the form of the three-movement "chamber sonata," but are woven together with a high degree of Bach-inspired counterpoint, sophisticated melody, and harmony, and provide a glimpse into Kreps's outstanding compositional talent. Performer Christian Schmidt is a renowned German organist with a wide repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music, and has performed with world-class conductors and orchestras including Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin, and Paavo Järvi and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has performed with conductors and orchestras worldwide. In Japan, he performed the world premiere of Toshio Hosokawa's organ concerto "Embrace" with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jakub Hrusha in 2017, which made a splash. cpo has released a collection of Mendelssohn's organ works (555484) and Vidor's "Organ Symphony Collection" (777706) This recording features the organ works of the remaining German churches. In this recording, the Kreps sonatas are performed with great skill and splendor on a historical organ from the period when Kreps was active in German churches.
