Debussy re-recordings by new Belcher Q members and Shimanowski
In 2023, the Belcha String Quartet welcomed Korean-Australian Soo-Young Kang as the second violinist. The first CD with the new members was a re-recording of Debussy, which was recorded at the beginning of their first album (EMI) in 2000, and two string quartets by Szymanowski. As this is a recording from a transitional period, the second violin in the first Shimanowski quartet is played by former member Axel Chacelle. Debussy's only string quartet is a masterpiece that shows the influence of Gregorian chant, folk music from the Gypsies to the Far East, and Javanese gamelan, and that he used the cyclic form proposed by Franck in his own way to put it all together, opening the way to a new aesthetic with his own reformed harmony, accompanied by exoticism. It was premiered in Paris in December 1893 by the Ysaÿe String Quartet.The first piece, a bold study of classical music and harmony, was composed in 1917, but premiered in Warsaw in 1924 after a short interval due to the effects of the Russian Revolution. The second piece is a tribute to the French music of the same period, especially to Ravel, and shows the influence of Polish folk music, and was premiered in Warsaw in 1929. The Belcher Quartet's deep attachment to and empathy with the unique musical languages of Debussy and Szymanowski, with whom they are closely related, allows them to beautifully portray the progressive nature and beauty of these works.
