Description:
Born in the Czech Republic and active in European countries before his death in Vienna, Gilovets was a leading composer of the period of transition from Classicism to Romanticism. His symphonies were sometimes published under Haydn's name, but he was a close friend of Mozart and played a concerto by Gyrowetz when Chopin made his debut in Vienna. The works on this disc are selected from the period before that, when he composed many instrumental works and was praised as "comparable to Haydn's best works". The conductor and orchestra on this disc are leading experts in the music of this period. The soloists include Michael Foyle, who has recorded the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas for Challenge Classics, and other talented young performers who have released recordings on European labels. Since it seems that Gillovetz's reappraisal of chamber music has been dominated by his orchestral works, this recording of high-level performances of his orchestral works is of great significance.
