Jean-Baptiste Nicolas

The art that Charpentier learned in Rome during the heyday of the double chorus and passed on to France. Charpentier learned the art of music in Rome, where he studied as a painter in his youth, and returned to France as a composer, where his talent blossomed. Although he did not receive any direct commissions from the royal family of Louis XIV due to persistent obstructions during the lifetime of Lully, the Superintendent General of the Royal Music, there were constant buyers for his works, including the Duchess of Guise and various organizations in Paris, and he left many works in various fields. The title work of this album is written in the form of a double chorus in which several choruses and ensembles sing and play together, a compositional technique developed by the pontifical composer Benevoli and other composers who were active in Rome during Charpentier's stay. The first half of the album includes works by Venetian composers such as Gabrieli and Monteverdi, who were also models for Benevoli and his colleagues, as well as works by their predecessors on the Italian peninsula who used the double chorus form, allowing the listener to hear their influence. The young conductor Jean-Baptiste Nicolas, born in 1994, plays with his own ensemble Musica Vera, and his fresh performance is superb as he skillfully leads a large multiple chorus, including a children's chorus. The orchestra has a characteristic instrumentation with more than twice as many brass and woodwind players as bowed string players, and one of the highlights is the inclusion of percussion instruments that beat time in accordance with 17th century Roman performance customs as documented in historical records.
