Svetlanov's "Scheherazade" live on CD for the first time. The BBC is pleased to present a new release from its collection. Svetlanov's "Scheelazade" was recorded in 1969 with the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra on MELODIYA, in February 1978 with the London Symphony Orchestra on EMI, and in the same month at the Royal Festival Hall (BBC). The tempo has changed a lot comparing the February 1978 session and the live performance, but this time the tempo is the fastest recorded in the same year, and each movement is up to 50 seconds shorter than the fastest one in February, and the fastest part of the tempo is not collapsed. The fast tempo sections are so tense that they often do not collapse. The beauty of the ensemble and the spontaneous singing of each soloist were the virtuosity of the London Symphony Orchestra, and the characteristics of Svetlanov, who is both dynamic and sensitive, were also alive and well. Svetlanov's expression was exhilarating.The album also includes the overture to "Pskov's Daughter," performed live on the same day.
