Marie Hall
Description:
This is a recording of Marie Hall (1884-1956), who was very active in the first quarter of the 20th century and contributed to the birth of Vaughan Williams' masterpiece "Aerial Lark". However, his family did not have the financial means to continue his education. He later recalled that he played everywhere, including on the street, to earn money for private lessons. At the age of 17, she impressed Jan Kubelík, who recommended her, and studied with Otákar Szewczyk, a well-known teacher at the Prague Conservatory. The following year, she performed in London with Henry Henry VIII. The following year, in London, she performed Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, and Wieniawski's Faust Fantasy with Henry Wood and the Queen's Hall Orchestra, achieving sensational success. In June 1908, she caught the attention of Vaughan Williams, who was present at the concert, and he later composed and dedicated to her "Fried Hibari".Both the piano and orchestral versions were premiered in Hall's solo performance of Elgar's Violin Concerto under the composer's baton in December 1912, which was highly acclaimed and resulted in the recording included here. However, due to the time constraints of SP recordings, the performance is a "shortened" version, with the first and second movements each clocking in at four minutes, and the third movement at seven and a half minutes. The reissue here is a performance from 1904-24. Although there are some limitations in terms of sound quality, the light and bouncy bowing in Ries' and Paganini's immaculate movements and regular movements are a joy to listen to, and the style of the time can be heard in the portamento at the beginning of Saint-Saens' "Swan" and Raff's use of vibrato in the Cavatina. Dvořák's Humoresque is melancholic and impressive at a gentle tempo. The works of Bach, Handel, and Leclerc are also valuable documents in the history of Baroque music performance. Naxos Japan
