Description:
Taste the refinement of Biber's art with the virtuoso Pogger. Heinrich Biber was active at the court of the Archbishop of Salzburg before Mozart and his father and son, and gained a high reputation as the most talented violinist and composer in the German-speaking world, and was also highly esteemed by the nobility. Rachel Podger, one of the leading baroque violinists of our time, has taken a head-on approach to this collection of solo sonatas from 1681, which showcases the best of his art, and crystallized it into an album of brilliant interpretations. Biber's "Rosary Sonatas" (c. 1674/78), dedicated to Archbishop Maximilian Gandolf of Salzburg, is well known for its unusual use of irregular tuning (scordatura), but this collection, published in the composer's 37th year, uses only minimal use of irregular tuning and more refined techniques. The compositions in this collection, published in the composer's 37th year, are characterized by the minimal use of irregular tunings and the pursuit of more refined technique and expressive power. Although there have been a few competing recordings in recent years, Pogger's precise and elegant performance, backed by her extensive career, provides a rich interpretation of the pieces that only she could have achieved. In addition to the five pieces from this collection, the album also includes the "Descriptive Sonata" (Biber's autograph score is believed to be a copy of Schmelzer's work), in which the violins depict birds, cats, chirping frogs, and musketeers in action. The "Descriptive Sonata" (Biber's autograph score is a copy of Schmelzer's work) is also included. Naxos Japan
