Vittorio Rieti was born in Egypt, the third generation of Italian immigrants, and moved to Italy when he was 19 years old. He studied composition with Respighi, Maripiero, and Casella, and in 1925 he went to Paris to further his studies. This album contains mainly works from Rieti's later years, and his creativity, which did not wane even in old age, is evident throughout. In an interview with The New York Times at the end of 1972, Rieti expressed his deep affinity for stage music, and he also mentioned that his association with Diaghilev and his experience as one of the pianists at the London premiere of Stravinsky's "The Marriage" in 1926 had a great influence on his musical formation. Many of the works here are small in scale, but impressive in their dynamic movement and refined expression.The "Scherzo March" (1976) and "Variazioni Enarmoniche" (1986) are humorous, lighthearted, and elegant, while the "Improvisation" is a delightful piece with a light melody. It is rhythmic and witty, intimate and lively. Other pieces of various character are also included. All are world premiere recordings. The third collection is performed by Giorgio Koukl, who was born in the Czech Republic in 1953 and is also an active composer.
