Description:
Fagerlund, whose works are continuously recorded by BIS, was born in Finland in 1972 and is internationally acclaimed. Autumn Equinox was commissioned by the 2017 Delft Chamber Music Festival. It is written in the same instrumentation as Schubert's Octet, incorporating light motifs from the opera "Hostsonaten Autumn Sonata," which Fagerlund composed based on Ingmar Bergman's film. Arkantio, commissioned by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, is a variation for double bass and chamber orchestra composed as part of Fagerlund's concerto series. He has worked on 12 concertos to date, creating a diverse body of work that exploits the technical possibilities of each instrument. The work was written for the renowned Dutch contrabassist Niek de Froot, who was the premiere performer and is the soloist on this recording. The title "Arcantio" means a song with an archaic melody. Sky II" is a modern instrumental version of "Sky," originally composed for baroque ensemble.The harpsichord was considered essential to the replacement and was left out of the composition, and the guitar and harpsichord are given the opportunity to improvise during the piece.
