The thrilling world of Bach as presented by Europe's foremost old-time instrumentalists This is a collection of Bach's works by a group of distinguished musicians from Belgium and France, two of Europe's great ancient instrumentalists, who are at the forefront of Europe's booming ancient instrument performance scene. After becoming choir director of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Bach pursued his own compositional world as a keyboard musician, while at the same time fostering many young composers. All three surviving works are collected here. In addition, to emulate the process of Bach's exploration of keyboard idioms through arrangements, a version of the "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3" for nine strings and bass continuo, which he wrote when he was court music director at Keten, is also included, arranged for four harpsichords. The Bach world of this small ensemble is truly thrilling, with a small group of talented string players who support leading ensembles such as Pygmalion, Cafe Zimmermann, and Nevermind, in addition to soloists such as Bertrand Cuyet, who arranged the music, and Jean-Luc Haut, who has made many famous recordings on the harmonia mundi france label. Engineered by Hugues Deschaux, who distinguished himself in his early ALPHA label recordings, this recording captures the delicate layering of the repellent strings and the delicate interplay of the gut strings in all their glory.
