Description:
A compilation of religious music from the "Great Century" by the most talented composers of France. Charpentier was a genius composer who was unable to obtain a post directly under the French royal family because Lully, the royal music director under Louis XIV, blocked his activities out of fear of his rise to power, and he continued to work mainly in Paris. This album, recorded in the royal chapel of the Palace of Versailles, is centered on the great mass music of his later years, and includes rarely heard instrumental music and organ music of the same period. The choir with a children's chorus of surprisingly exquisite sound and the delicate playing of ancient instruments will give shape to these pieces, along with singers such as David Tricoux and Romain Champion, who have earned a solid reputation in the French ancient music scene. The ensemble Marguerite Louise is led by Gaëtan Jari, who has made a name for himself in the French Baroque music theater scene in recent years.The instrumentalists, including Sebastien Marc on traverso, Marc Wolff on theorbo, and Patrick Vivard, a master of the bass wind instrument Serpan, are all reliable, and the soloists and chorus are superb, with their attractive French Latin sound. As is the label's custom, the commentary (in French, English, and German) is also excellent, and this is a disc where you can listen carefully to the new world of Charpentier's later years, which goes beyond his famous works such as "Midnight Mass" and "Te Deum".
