Johann Rosenmüller was a musician in Leipzig, but fled to Venice in 1655 due to a scandal.There he worked in St. Mark's Basilica and the Pietà Charitable Institute, resulting in a new style of church music that incorporated Italian musical styles. His works combine German strict counterpoint with Italian emotional expression, and are characterized by rich sonic contrasts, from solo arias to ensembles and double choruses. Many of his Latin psalms and church music are preserved in Germany, and it is believed that these were written for German patrons. In particular, "Laetatus sum" and "Dixit Dominus" have themes symbolizing peace and power, and may have been intended for performance at the Catholic court because of his relationship with Johann Friedrich, Duke of Hanover. The innovation and expressiveness of his works were admired at the time, and his works continue to have a strong influence on audiences today. (Naxos Japan)
