Description:
Richard Rösler (variously spelled RoBler, RoeBler, Rossler, etc.) was born in Riga in 1880 to a Baltic German mother and a German violinist father of Czech origin. After moving around Riga, Kalisch, and Giraldov during his childhood due to his father's work, he returned to Riga to pursue his musical education, graduating from the local music school and then entering the Berlin University of the Arts. He studied composition with Max Bruch and piano with Karl Heinrich Barth and Ernst Rudolf, and at the age of 20 was awarded the Mendelssohn Composition Prize. He was hired by the University as a piano teacher. The Sextet and Piano Quintet on this album are strongly influenced by late Romanticism and the German and Austrian music of the same period, including Brahms. The Sextet, Op. 16, is characterized by dynamic rhythms, with a complex passacaglia in the first movement. Each instrument plays a well-balanced role, but the piano plays a particularly important role. The Piano Quintet, Op. 28, was composed during World War I, but it is a beautiful work with a concerto character that does not show the effects of the dark times.The first movement uses motifs reminiscent of Schumann, the syncopation of the second movement, and the rhythmic third movement with its dances are also impressive.
