Joseph Weigl was a musician whose parents served the Esterházy family. Influenced by his father, he became familiar with music, and at a young age, he was recognized by Salieri and Gluck and gained fame as a composer of operas.He composed more than 30 operas, music for theater and ballet, and religious works, but showed little interest in instrumental works, and these six trios for oboe, violin, and cello are barely known. The autograph of this collection is kept in the Austrian National Library, but the works are not titled or dated, and although they may have been composed after the mid-1780s, they have never been published. The triplets are in three parts, and although the oboe takes the leading role on many occasions, the three instruments are well balanced, and the structure of each piece is all very ingenious. For example, there is a Mozart-style adagio in No. 1, a fugue and siciliana in No. 3, a B minor variation movement in No. 5, and an elaborate double fugue in the second movement of the final No. 6. It is speculated that Weigl composed these trios for a private concert of Empress Maria Theresa. (Naxos Japan)
