The album is composed by Patrizia Kopatchinskaja with Camerata Bern and its principal cellist, Thomas Kaufmann, on the theme of people who have been forced to flee their homeland or have no choice but to leave. The program is based on Kopatchinskaja's own feeling that her homeland of Moldova is lost to her, that she is trapped there but no longer has roots there, that she is forever rootless. Schnittke's cello sonata for strings rises from a rhythmic but somewhat uneasy arrangement of a traditional piece originally performed on the kugikuri (panpipes), a folk instrument common to both Ukraine and Russia, and develops into a composition reminiscent of a giant steam engine, making for a stunning opening.Kopatchinskaya's Moldovan folklore with a clear voice riding on a disturbing sound, Panuchnik, who was forbidden to play in his native Poland, Schubert, who can be called an internal exile, and Vishnegradsky, who devoted himself to music with twelve-tone and quarter-tone in Soviet Russia and defected to France, are followed, and lastly, Isay The last piece is "The Fugitive," written for violin and viola ensemble while Isay was music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. This is an album that marks a deep empathy with the work through incisive interpretation and expression. The Japanese edition includes a Japanese translation of the commentary.
