A project typical of cpo, the piano concerto by Volker, known as the author of a critical biography of Bach, is performed on period instruments. All pieces are world premiere recordings. Folkel was born near Coburg in 1749 and learned music from the local cantor. Later, while studying law at the University of Göttingen, he also studied music theory and history, and contributed to the development of music through music education and scholarly concerts. An ardent follower of Bach, he published his first biography of Bach in 1802 and is known for his praise of Bach's achievements as a German national heritage. Volker's works include 22 concertos, 12 of which have surviving written transcriptions. This album contains the world premiere recording of four of his piano concertos. His compositional activities continued from 1769 to 1796, and while his early keyboard music seems to have been intended for the harpsichord, in his later years he increasingly specified the fortepiano, which is also used in this recording.
