Don Quixote" with two master soloists and a hidden popular work by Ibert This album features two musical works based on Cervantes' "Don Quixote" by Danish conductor/violinist Nicolai Schepps-Znaider and the Orchestre National de Lyon, for which he serves as music director.Richard Strauss' sixth symphonic poem "Don Quixote" features two guest musicians, Amihai Gross, principal viola of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Jean Wang, cello, who has made many recordings for the DG label. The two guest artists, Jean Wang and Jean-Claude Lacroix, both of whom have recorded extensively for the DG label, provide a rich narrative music based on their respective fine skills and rich expressiveness, and enhanced by the brilliant orchestration. The coupling is a suite from the ballet "The Itinerant Knight" by Ibert. The original work, composed in 1935, requires two narrators and a chorus, but about two-thirds of the elements have been reconstructed in this suite version. The saxophone plays an active role here and there, and the guitar also makes an appearance to create a Spanish atmosphere. The refined melody and light variation, typical of Ibert, are gorgeously orchestrated, and some parts of this popular work have also been arranged for brass band. (Naxos Japan)
