Description:
This is a recording of the viola bastarda, an instrument still shrouded in mystery, restored by the performer himself. The viola bastarda is an instrument of the viola da gamba family, intermediate in size between tenor and bass, and is said to have had a role in improvisation, sometimes breaking away from a specific part. Gamba player and researcher Paolo Viordi has restored the instrument and strings himself based on the descriptions in the "Syntagma musicum" and other works published by Praetorius in 1619. He has adopted a tuning method that applies the cembalo's mintone tuning. Vincenzo Bonizzi was a composer active in Parma during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the work recorded here is the last one written for viola bastarda. It is mainly of the "diminution" type, in which improvisational variations on the melody of a popular song of the time unfold, and the listener can enjoy the extended tone of this instrument and its harmonious sound with the harpsichord.
