An album commemorating the 400th anniversary of William Byrd's death. Here comes the Great Service, a masterpiece of church music in English. The Great Service, composed for the Church of England, was first published after World War I as the second volume of the Tudor Church Music series, and since its revival in Newcastle in 1924, it is now considered one of the finest pieces of Church of England music. This recording celebrates the 100th anniversary of the revival. The "Great Service" consists of seven major prayers of the Anglican service, "Venite," "Te Deum," and "Benedictus" from the morning service, "Kyrie" and "Clade" from the sacrament service, and "Magnificat" and "Nunc Dimittis" from the evening service, and is composed in ten voices. The work reflects Byrd's skillful compositional technique using ten voices. The performance is originally unaccompanied or accompanied only by a small organ, but as was customary in English religious vocal music of the late Tudor and Steuart periods, sackbuts and cornets are also added, creating a magnificent sound.
