The opera "Love Letters from the Camps" tells the story of Jaap Pollack, a Jewish Dutchman interned in the Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany during the Holocaust, his wife Manya, and Ina, with whom Jaap fell in love.The original title, Steal A Pencil For Me, comes from Yarp's request to Ina to write a secret letter, and the "love letters" they exchanged were the basis for the work, which was also published as a book of the same name. Composer Gerald Cohen has known Jaap and Ina for over 25 years, and was inspired to compose this opera by actually hearing them speak and reading their letters; it was premiered by Opera Colorado in 2018, and this recording is by nearly the same members who performed it for the first time.
