Loth To Depart Performers Florent Marie (8-course lute/produced by Jean-Louis Marie) Recording: November 3-5, 2023 at Abroville Church (Orne, Normandy, Northwestern France) Duration: 63 min. After studying under Pascal Garon at the Conservatoire de Caen in Normandy, lute player Florent Marie studied at the Conservatoire de Lyon in France, which has a rich history of ancient music research different from that of Paris and Versailles. He is a member of the Ensemble Celadon and the Douce Mémoire, which specialize in medieval and Renaissance music, as well as the Ensemble Correspondances and Les Folies Françaises, which have a deep knowledge of Baroque music, and Philippe Herreweghe's Collegium Vocale Ghent, where he plays the bass continuo. At the Conservatoire de Lyon, he studied polyphonic improvisation and the old musical language of the 15th to 17th centuries, which culminated in his solo debut on the Carpe Diem label (CD-16327). This second release on the same label is a collection of works by the English composer Dowland, a great master of lute music. The theme is "melancholy," which is an important keyword when reading about this musician and British culture, and the selection of pieces is connected to Dowland's journey to Italy via Germany and the episodes of his difficult return home after the Danish royal period. The selection of pieces is a reminder of the composer's wide-ranging activities, which were not limited to the artistic vocabulary of the British. The beautiful sound of Florent Marie's lute, which has a dazzling brilliance behind its dull resonance, is also attractive. The performance captures the rich drama of the music, while bringing out the polyphonic writing style, and the richness of the composer's solo music can be fully appreciated. (Naxos Japan)
