Description:
Alfred Dubois, a teacher of Gumiaux and others, was the modern-day leader of the Franco-Belgian school of music. This reissue includes his two concerto recordings and others. The recordings of Ysaÿe's Sonata No. 3 for Solo and other pieces are also very attractive. At the age of 12, Alfred Dubois entered the Brussels Conservatory to study violin with Alexandre Cornelis, and three years later received the Premiers Prix. After graduation, he continued to study privately with Cornelis, but some consider Dubois to be a pupil of Ysaÿe, as he also took lessons from him. 22 years old, he was awarded the Vieux Tin Prize by the city of Brussels and began his career as a soloist in earnest, and in 1927 he succeeded Ysaÿe on the faculty of the Brussels In 1927, he joined the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, succeeding Ysaÿe. Although today Dubois is often referred to as "Grumiaux's teacher," he was highly regarded as Belgium's leading violinist during World War I and World War II. This disc reissues the two concerto recordings Du Bois left behind, with smaller pieces in the margins. The first piece was once given a number by Kechel and was popularly known as "Mozart's No. 6," and has been recorded by such greats as Thibaud and Ferras. It is regrettable that the number of recordings of this piece has decreased since it was judged as Eck's work. Wuertin's No. 5 was given the nickname "Le Grétry" because the adagio at the beginning of the second movement quotes a melody from the opera "Lucille" by Grétry. Since this piece was originally composed as an assignment, there are many technical highlights, and Du Bois's technique and the way he sings the song-like melody with rich vibrato add to the charm of this piece. The prestigious Handel and the virtuoso Ysaye and Kreisler also convey the various charms of this performer. Naxos Japan
